There are infinite possibilities of delight in a unique natural setting for visitors who tour the glacier region. On foot, by car or by boat, all are good options to explore this unique area of Patagonia, Argentina.
If you choose to go by car you can enjoy the Redonda Bay, Lake Argentino and the Solitaria island. In the journey you can spot some old Patagonian ranches and several hills, as the Comisión or De los Elefantes, and crossing the river Mitre you will be within the Los Glaciares National Park.
A second option is a coastal trek that will take you to the Icebergs Canal, where the Perito Moreno deposited large blocks of ice that go off the walls, ending the tour at the very foot of the glacier. It is possible to go on sections of the glacier walking or watch the largest glacier, the Upsala, from a catamaran on Lake Argentino, starting from Punta Bandera. This itinerary can be extended to the Bay Onelli and then to a path that ends at the point of contact between the Onelli, Agassis and Bolado glaciers. Of course you can still continue the trip and reach the view of three glaciers: Spegazzini, Mayo and Frías.
Those wishing to document the visit to the glacier have the opportunity to make a photographic safari navigating against the south wall of Perito Moreno. This is the only way to access that section of the icefall.
The diversity of environments allows other options as hiking excursions to Lake Roca that surprises with the presence of eagles, vultures and condors. Or you can participate in the trek through the National Park and enjoy a walking tour around Lake Desierto. Another visit is the catamaran sailing on the lakes close to the Upsala and Spegazzini glaciers and Onelli bay, depot floes that come off the nearby glaciers.
To these experiences can add the hot air balloon flights, horseback riding tours, fishing for trout and salmon, bike rides, visits the Patagonian ranches with demonstrations of sheep shearing and herding, and the opportunity to access sites with the rock art like Punta Gualichoin front of Lake Argentino.
The starting point is El Calafate, a town that also acts as a gateway to the Perito Moreno. You reach the city via National Road No. 40 and then by turning west at the intersection with Provincial Route No. 11.
In El Calafate there are tourist services covering all the hotels and restaurants, coupled with some campsites and ranches near the glacier. It is also possible to hire all kinds of excursions to the Perito Moreno and surrounding areas.
From El Calafate you can go to the village El Chaltén, key location for those looking to ascend to Mount Fitz Roy or Torre. This small village is located in the northern part of the National Park and is located at the confluence of the rivers De las Vueltas and Fitz Roy. The villa has camping, hotel, food and excursions.
Many options to travel from one side to another through a region of remarkable beauty and depth.
