Lake Tromen and International Pass to Pucón (Chile)

Lake Tromen is one of those places worth visiting. There you will find spectacular scenery, dominated by the Lanín volcano with beautiful green waters and fine volcanic sands. All seasoned with the possibility of visits to Mapuche communities, camping overnight in farms, fish and leaving for Chile. In this case, the road is the International Pass Mamuil Malal/Tromen and the almost straight crossing to the two most important tourist centers in southern Chile: Pucón and Villarrica.

How is the tour? Attention, take note.

From Junín de los Andes you must take north the Provincial Route 23. Turn left at Provincial Route 60 toward the International Pass (west). Along this route there are access to two Mapuche communities: Communities Atreico and Chuiquilhuin, located 23 and 40 kilometers respectively from Junin de los Andes. In these communities you can see crafts in wool and wood made by their inhabitants.

On both sides of Route 60 are also located farms and two hostels, which stand out as tourist services, one of which is near Malleo river and the other on the shore of Lake Tromen. Two of the favorite spots for fishermen.

Continuing along this road, 45 km from Junín you enter Lanín National Park, area Tromen, Sectional Turbio. This park protects a lush natural forest of pehuenes or araucarias araucanas, as well as the rest of the flora, fauna and the lake Tromen.

The latter has five arms: north Añihueraqui Inlet, east Huaca-Mamuil Inlet, south Malleo Inlet and west two arms that guide their direction to the northwest. The landscapes of this area are wonderful and it is convinient to make the journey at low march to appreciate it fully.

The lake drains southwest into Malleo river. Its beaches are composed of volcanic sand and boulders, being its clear waters and greenish with intense waves. But without a doubt it is the Lanín volcano which influences the landscape and who makes life unique experiences, as described by seasoned mountaineers. 

Arriving at the border station you can perform activities such as:

  • Camping in the enabled area
  • Trekking (to Tromen lookout, to the base of Lanin volcano, to shelters)
  • Climbs to the volcano (properly equipped and with prior approval of the warden of the sectional)
  • Sport fishing in the lake Tromen and Malleo river
  • Or simply admire the spectacular scenery offered by the Lanín volcano.

Total round travel to Lake Tromen: 136 kilometers.

International Pass and towns in Chile

Continuing the tour of Route 60 you reach the International Pass Mamuil Malal and 40 km from the border is the first resort in Chile, the town of Cararrehue ("stone altar"). This is a small village of simple constructions emerging on the shore of Trancura river, surrounded by Pulomo and Marillanca hills, covered with forests. After another 32 kilometers you will reach the most important tourist center of southern Chile, the town of Pucón, located at the foot of the Villarrica volcano and the lake of the same name.

There you can enjoy many recreational opportunities: rivers, volcanoes, lakes, mountains, parks, beaches, spas, sport fishing, horseback riding, outdoors, canoeing, rafting, snow skiing and water skiing, windsurfing, besides offering a wide variety of hotels and the luxury casino in the city.

Departing from Pucón and traveling 26 km, the route along the lake leads to the town of Villarrica, which also offers all the options for tourism and recreation.
