Lake Tres

The gravel road leading to Lake Tres is a sign of changing Patagonian vegetation, ranging from the steppe to the prairie. The journey has ups and downs. A thousand meters before you can see the lake in a depression surrounded by low hills lined with groves. Rainbow trout are large in lake Tres weighing about 4 or 5 kg.

It is a place to fish with fishing floats or boats with no more than 30 horsepower. It is an important place where you can fly fish only with compulsory return. It is prohibited trawling in any form.

Studying the nymphs you can observe a great number of organisms, including crustaceans Hyallelidae family, small amphipod known by fly fishermen as "scud". Nymphs are also huge dragon-flies, freshwater mussels lining in the riverbed and the smallest are consumed by rainbow trout.

It is imperative to use barbless flies to release the fish easily once it's at hand. To fish in that lake you must have three lines: a floating, a slow sinking and another one with which you can carry the fly to the riverbed. Given the size of the trout any equipment less than 6 is light, unnecessarily prolonging the fighting and threatening the recovery of the fish.

Senguerr basin

From Lake La Plata, through the Union River that links the first with the Lake Fontana and the Senguerr river throughout its course to its mouth at Lake Musters, there are brown trout, rainbow and brook trout.

In lakes dominated  brook trout and rainbow trout in the upper course of the river, the brook trout, in the lower the rainbow trout and near the mouth are the perch (creole trout).

La Plata and Fontana lakes have the largest fisheries in the southwest region of Chubut. The Senguerr river like the whole water system in the region has abundant water and good bite. At the height of Facundo, a small town on the banks of the river there is usually a good festival of brook and rainbow trout.

Directions

From Bariloche, towards Esquel through the Provincial Road 258. South of Epuyén take a detour to find the famous National Road No. 40 that will take you to the height of Esquel to bend to the east towards Tecka and Gobernador Costa. Once there continue along the Provincial Road No. 20 to La Laurita always due south to a town called Los Tamariscos. There is a path that leads to Alto Rio Senguer, a typical patagonian village windswept, from where it reaches the Senguer river.

From Comodoro Rivadavia you start from Provincial Route No. 26 that goes to Esquel. There is National Route 40, turn left before reaching Alto Río Senguer, see the north path that leads to Lake La Plata. If you cross the town out by National Route No. 40 as going to Rio Mayo and south, after crossing the bridge of Senguer river, you must turn right onto the road that goes to Ricardo Rojas. After about 15 km see the path that leads to the southern shore of Lake Fontanta.

Recommendations

• For flyfishing is recommended the numbers 6 to 8 with sinking line. For spinning is indicated a rod from 2,20 to 2,40.

• The best flies are:
  - Streamers. (Woolly bugger, zonker and others) Size 4 to 8
  - Dry flies. Adams, Wulff, March Brown y Dark Cahill. Size 12 to 16
  - Nymphs of peacock as the Prince or similar from 10 to 14
