The province of Chubut is located between parallels 42 and 46 south latitude and between the Atlantic Ocean and the Andes mountain range. Has an area of 224,688 km2 and 413,237 inhabitants (census 2001) with a density of 1.84 people per km2.
It has a unique geography of sea, beaches, valleys, mountains and lakes. The territory can be divided into three distinct regions: the mountains, the central plateau and the Atlantic coast, each with its own particular attraction. In the mountains and the Atlantic coast are the major tourist attraction centers, which are linked by a vast central plateau, the Patagonian steppe.
In this area we can swim and sunbathe on the beaches of Puerto Madryn and tour the Valdes Peninsula, internationally known for its wildlife. There we will find the southern right whale, sea lions and elephant seals, Magellanic penguins, among others.
Also in the coastal zone you can see the bottlenose dolphin on the beautiful Playa Unión nearby Rawson and Trelew. In the latter city you can visit the Paleontological Museum Egidio Feruglio and then go to tea at Gaiman where recid a Welsh colony that has lost none of their traditions.
Continuing along Route 3 south, we find the protected areas of Punta Tombo with penguins and Cabo Dos Bahías with guanacos, besides being able to visit the sealions and bathe on the beach of Rada Tilly a few kilometers from Comodoro Rivadavia.
Central Zone
On the plateau the climate is harsh and poor rural population are in small nuclear centers or villages, or is scattered in positions of livestock farms devoted almost exclusively to the breeding and care of sheep.
Touring this area means go throguh the Patagonian desert with steppe landscape and get to the ridge of mountains, forests and lakes, whose main city is Esquel. If you are encouraged to gravel roads, you will know tiny villages whose inhabitants know how to enjoy the solitude and will told you stories of life yo will remember.
You can see along the route the wind farms that generate electricity or, if you prefer, you can visit the wind farm in Comodoro Rivadavia.
Taking to the west you will find the Petrified Forest Sarmiento, you can practice sport fishing and learn about rural tourism in Río Mayo, reaching the lakes Fontana and La Plata at the border with Chile.
This region has all the outstanding beauty of the Andes mountain range, where mountains, lakes, rivers and forests combine to leave you breathless. Adventure tourism in this area is unlimited: 4x4 tours, mountain climbing, skiing, rafting, paragliding and hang gliding. But if your heart will not let you do this you can go horseback riding, camping and trekkin. It is also the ideal area for fishing in rivers and lakes and enjoy the cuisine with local products such as trout, herbs, mushrooms and fine fruit.
