Winters in Ushuaia, special events See map

Since many years, residents of Ushuaia and its visitors celebrate winter holidays together, either in the city and beyond, participating in sport, recreation and culture activities, or as spectators attending events where others are moving on snow.

A good example of this are the massive "marches" of cross-country skiing, which takes place once a year and use the slopes laid in the Valley of Tierra Mayor and unite the various ski resorts of Route 3.

The first White March, as is called the most traditional of this kind, was performed in 1981 between the lodge Petrel (raised on the shores of Lake Escondido) and Tierra Mayor, organized by the family Giró.

Since then, participants of all ages are part of this meeting looking for entertainment that is far from the competitive target. However, of course, the crossings are also a good opportunity for athletes looking to improve their performances, significantly advance to families and reach the goal within minutes, while the rest of the peloton finished about an hour later at least.

Another event that brings many spectators and more participants, especially children, is the dog sled race southernmost in the world: Ushuaia Sled Dog Race, in which are teams registering from around the world.

Organized by some ski resorts, competition gather international expertise authorities, who work with local organizers in the development of tests each day. One of his most active supporters is the Gato Curuchet (gatocuruchet@hotmail.com), head of the ski resort "Altos del Valle". It is a career that is a traditional festival for runners and public alike.

Besides, we will mention that in the midst of Ushuaia Sled Dog Race it is performedf another competition, which is key in the event: children's race. Young of all ages take part, even from other countries, many of them to show the work they do for the rest of the year in local driving schools dogsled (mushing). The show is complete.

It is impossible not to mention the National Meeting of Sculptors Snow, held for years and which aims to establish itself as an winter, cultural and tourism attraction in Ushuaia.
